It was an overall great discussion and fun time with two vibrant young tech guys from Fraktio that came to say hi to us -the aspiring software developers (winter batch 2019) on 18th March 2019 at Integrify headquarters, Helsinki. Fraktio is a startup started in 2012 currently based in Helsinki. They are mainly into software development at the moment but also IOT, VR, AR and Machine learning (coming soon). Learn more about Fraktio. Both Panu and Tommi gave a lot of insider info from the software development industry, if all sound interesting so far to you, keep reading. I will highlight briefly the key points of our discussions.

1. Software developers have freedom: you can decide to work remotely or anywhere you choose. Your laptop is your office and your tool is your brain full of codes 🤣. However, stopping by at the office to socialize with fellow developers and brainstorm on problems makes you a better developer.

2. Broad versus deep knowledge: finding your area of expertise among the numerous options in the software development industry is very important. This does not stop you from knowing one or two things about other areas. The concept of T-shape skills was discussed.

3. Software developers get good bucks: for a junior developer, starting salary is around €2.5k to €3k per month. Mid-level developers get €3.5k to €4.5k. But one important thing, if you want to start getting paid as a developer you must learn to learn first and be ready to become a life-long learner who is self-driven and highly motivated. The money will come and you will be happier even more with great colleagues that use codes to solve world problems.

4. Software developers are in high demands: there is a lot of startups here and there and they all wanted software developers. Even bigger cooperation as well are constantly looking for in-house developers. Another upcoming way for software developers to get more jobs is through consultancy which I will discuss next.

5. Consultancy or not as a software developer: depending on software project needs, companies usually opt for consultancy option where a group of developers is brought on a project for a specific period of time and get the deal done. This could be quite expensive for companies sometimes and that means developers get to have more bucks in their pocket. For a 50–100 employee software consultancy firm based in Helsinki area, it could cost €100 or more per hour and the hourly pricing is based on several factors.

6. Soft skills for developers: looking for a new job or you don’t want to be fired as a developer, then you have to develop your soft skills in terms of social, integrity/honesty, personality, and communication skills and is as simple as that. Of course, do not forget to master that Vanilla js and non-Vanilla one as well.

Integrify is a place where technology is used as a tool for integrating people into the Finnish society come to say hi sometimes. We are awesome people. Look forward to more amazing post coming soon from me -rf (react Finland, 2019).
